Action Outdoors
Information for Teachers and School Groups

Action Outdoors specializes in educational experiences on the water. In an effort to help teachers and schools create an exciting learning environment, we have created a number of resources to prepare you for your next adventure.

Use our Educational Resources to prepare yourself and those going with you for the trip. Learn about what you will see to have a better understanding of our qualified staff's descriptions and narrations as you touch and see new exciting creatures. Included in the Education Resources are lessons about Dolphins, Coastal Birds, Plankton and other animals we catch In the Net .

Click here to print out the Alabama Course of Study Correlations and the Correlation to Mississippi Science Framework Standards that accompany the Duke Field Trip.

The Dolphin lessons feature full lessons on Taxonomy, Anatomy, Adaptation, Communication and Echolocation and Dolphin Conservation. You can practice Classifying Animals Online or print out the Classroom Handouts and Teachers Guide to practice classifying in the classroom. The Anatomy page includes a printable handout that you are invited to use to help students learn how to identify the parts of the dolphin. There is also a Teachers Guide for this handout.

Blue crabs caught with the Trawl Net

The Coastal Birds lesson describes characteristics of the birds you may see on your Educational Experience. Of particular interest is the plight of the Brown Pelican and how DDT poisoning nearly caused their extinction.

There is also a lesson about Biomagnification and how it effected a whole ecosystem in Borneo leading to operation Cat Drop. Feel free to use the printable handout in your classroom.

Keep an eye on our Virtual Trip page for new exciting events that have happened on our educational trips. Plan to make your own visit and become a part of the history of the Action Outdoors.

Thing to bring on your visit:

  • Binoculars
  • Camera and Video camera
  • Water Bottle
  • Sneakers or rubber sole shoes (high heels and leather soles get slippery on the deck)
  • Your children or students
  • You may want to bring hand sanitizer to use after the trip
  • No Glass Containers
  • A desire to experience things you may have never seen
A Note From the Captain: Our primary goal from Labor Day to Memorial Day is to awaken in each student who boards one of our vessels awareness and awe of the amazing web of vibrant life our wetlands possess. It is our hope that each student will carry with him a lifelong love of our diverse natural coastal environment.

Action Outdoors is United States Coast Guard inspected with life jacket for all ages and sizes. We are fully insured for any trips you may plan. Also animal friendly.
